Although I already made a video about where to download them I want to make a post here too. Especially because new quality rips have appeared recently in the torrent world. If you need zippyshare links or such for them then just ask.

RE: Tsai Ming-Liang & Lee Kang-Sheng Filmography + Downloads
Hello, can anyone help me understand something about The Hole (1998)?

So, I just got done watching this film and I'm a tad confused about the musical parts. For some reason I first thought it was like Shakespeare and his use of comic relief, I'm not sure why I thought of that, maybe because of the extreme sense of alienation and lonliness that surrounds this film. Although after seeing the other musical numbers after the first I now think that it was one of the two actors "fantasizing" or imagining the other.

Am I right? If not could you try to explain?
If I am right, is it Lee Kang-Sheng that is imagining this or the other way around?

I'm fairly new to films like these, I really do enjoy them. However I can't deny the fact that I seem to struggle quite often trying to understand the genius that Ming-Liang and others have put into these.

Thanks. Smile

My interpretation is that it's the two main characters fantasizing about tenderness and closeness when they can't have it, and it's to juxtapose with the rest of the film's tone, which is pretty much the exact opposite of a cheerful, camp musical.
Of course I'm no expert and this is just my opinion.
Punk rock should mean freedom. Liking and accepting anything that you like, playing whatever you want, as sloppy as you want. As long as it's good and it has passion. - Kurt Cobain

Oops guys, do not discuss the movies here, try to make a seperate thread for each movie you want to discuss.
Something like:

The Hole (1998) - Spoiler alert

Even when you say something about what they do in the movie, e.g ''fantasizing'' it can already give you an idea about the film.
The best is to just watch it, without any information given except the things the director want you to see like the cover and title.

Ahh, don't know why that didn't cross my mind.

EDIT: Actually, no need for a new thread, I've talked about it quite a bit with some other people, however if someone wants to make a new thread I will be glad to share my thoughts.
Will make a new thread for this now, thanks.

Here is what the director himself said:
"The musical numbers play a different role here than they do in other musicals. For me it's more like the statement of the inner world, particularly of the female character. This woman apparently is very cold, on the surface she has to be very fierce to fight her environment, she's very defensive. But her inner world is very passionate and she craves somebody to love her.

On another level, the musical numbers are weapons that I use to confront the environment at the end of the millennium. Because I think that toward the end of the century a lot of qualities--such as passionate desire, naive simplicity--have been suppressed. The musicals contain those qualities. It's something that I use psychologically to confront that world."

I don't agree. I actually told him to post it here. If you haven't watched them you simply shouldn't be reading here. The best we can do is put the spoilet alert in each post but to discuss all of their films on the same thread is great.

Just finished watching the river. Although I could see it coming, the scene (won't spoil it) towards the end was still quite unsettling. I'm slowly starting to appreciate these films for what they are now, and understand how bad "hollywood" films are, so thanks.

I have to say my favorite of them so far is rebels of the neon god Smile

Rebels is really good, I watched it over a year ago. I still remember how perfect it was, perfectly resembles the hate of today.
